　　Threeyearsbefore,ClydemeetsNancy,whosemaidennamewasMonks,whensheenrollsinhisartclass.ThemoodyClydesoonfallsinlovewithNancy'shonestcharmandbeauty.Nancy,asecretary,introducesClydetoherboss,millionaireAndrewBonner,andpersuadesBonnertoshowcaseClyde'spaintingsatoneofhisprivateshowings.ToNancy'sdelight,Clyde'spainting,adepictionofthetragicfigureCassandraforwhichshemodeled,winsfirstprizeattheshowing.Theeveningisperfectuntilanexpensivebraceletisstolenfromaguest,andClydelaterfindsitinNancy'spurse.AfterClydeconfrontsaconfusedNancyaboutthetheft,sherelatesthefollowingstorytoexplainherbehavior:
